Liturgical Year
The Liturgical Year celebrates the Life, Death, and Resurrection of Jesus Christ.
The Church calendar is divided into six seasons: Advent, Christmas, Lent, Triduum, Easter, and Ordinary Time. The liturgical year begins on the First Sunday of Advent and ends on the Saturday following the Solemnity of Christ the King.
Advent and Christmas
The major seasons of Advent and Christmas focus on the mystery of the incarnation; that is, the entering into our world of the second person of the blessed trinity as the man, Jesus of Nazareth.
Lent, Triduum, Easter
The major seasons of Lent, Triduum, and Easter focus on the paschal mystery; that is, the dying and rising of that same Jesus.
Ordinary Time
The entire rest of the year, the period of Ordinary Time, gives all of us an opportunity to focus on what those mysteries mean to us as individuals and as a community.
When we think of Ordinary Time, we think Green. Unlike Advent, Christmas, Lent and Easter there are very few images, if any, that come to mind when we think Ordinary Time. Yet Ordinary Time is far from 'ordinary'. Ordinary Time offers us the opportunity to reflect more deeply on the Paschal Mystery that we celebrate every Sunday. How can anytime that involves the Paschal Mystery (Christ's Life, Death and Resurrection) be considered anything else but extra-ordinary?
Until November 30th do not think that Sunday is just Ordinary. Think what Jesus did for us, and what we in turn are called to do as Christians. You will realize very soon that our Sunday celebration is by no way ordinary, but something very extraordinary that we are privileged to partake in.
As you enjoy the seasons, take time to praise God for the miracle of creation, and give thanks for the small, ordinary miracles in your life.
